Your frequently asked questions
Carrying value’ refers to insurance cover for goods or objects that you carry on your person or in your luggage, such as jewellery, watches, electronic devices or other valuables.
By distinguishing between the overall value of your collection and the maximum value you can carry on your daily travels, you can reduce your insurance premium.
If you have a collection of 10 watches, it is very rare for you to carry more than one at a time.
The insurer therefore assumes that 90% of your collection is in a safe at home or at the bank. With only 10% of the collection in circulation, the overall risk is minimised.
Of course, there may be exceptions: if the policyholder has to move his entire collection when moving house or changing safe deposit boxes from one bank to another.
In such cases, it is essential to inform the insurer.
The theft of a luxury watch is an unfortunate incident that can have significant financial consequences. If your luxury watch has been stolen, here are the steps you should take to deal with the situation :
- Alert the local authorities : The first step is to contact the local police immediately to report the theft. Provide them with as many details as possible, including a description of the watch, its serial number (if available), the location and presumed time of theft, and any other relevant information. To contact the police in Switzerland (117), France (17) and Europe (112).
- Contact Watch For Life : If you have taken out WFL insurance, contact our claims department as soon as possible to report the theft and we will guide you through the steps involved in submitting a claim: sinistre@watchforlife.ch ,+ 41 22 310 17 00
- Prepare all the necessary documents, such as the police report, proof of purchase and any other information.
- Inform the manufacturer or retailer : Contact the watch manufacturer or retailer to report the theft. Some luxury watch brands may have specific procedures for dealing with stolen watches. They may be able to help you track the watch if it is spotted when it is resold or repaired.
- Keep an eye on online markets and social networks : Stolen watches are sometimes offered for sale on online markets, auction sites or social networks. Keep an eye on these platforms to spot your watch. If you have solid evidence that the watch for sale is yours, report it to the relevant authorities.
- Keep all documents and communications : Throughout the process, make sure you keep all documents, police reports, emails, messages or other communications related to the theft of the watch. These documents may be useful to us in dealing with your claim or in helping to recover the watch.
It is essential to act quickly and follow these steps diligently if a luxury watch is stolen, as reacting quickly can increase your chances of recovering it.
To protect a luxury watch at home, you should consider installing a high-quality safe. Here are some features to consider :
- Type of safe : Choose a residential safe, preferably one that is fire-resistant and burglar-proof.
- Certification : Make sure the safe is certified to recognised security standards, such as EN 1143-1 for burglar-proof safes.
- Size : Choose a safe that’s big enough to hold your watch and other valuables, yet fits discreetly into your home.
- Lock : Choose a high-security electronic lock or a mechanical combination lock.
- Location : Place the safe in a discreet, well-anchored location, preferably in a wall or on the floor.
- Professional installation : Have the safe installed by a security professional to ensure correct installation.
- Inform Watch For Life of the presence of the safe to determine whether the grade is appropriate for the value of your collection :
Grade 0 | </= 50 000 € |
Grade 1 | </= 80 000 € |
Grade 2 | </= 150 000 € |
Grade 3 | </= 250 000 € |
Grade 4 | </= 400 000 € |
Grade 5 | </= 550 000 € |
Grade 6 | </= 700 000 € |
Grade 7 | </= 850 000 € |
Grace 8 | </= 1 000 000 € |
- Maintenance : Make sure you maintain the safe regularly to ensure it works properly.
Don’t forget to keep a secure copy of the documentation relating to your luxury watch, such as the purchase invoice and proof of authenticity, outside the safe in case you need this information.
Yes, your policy is worldwide (except for countries at war).
It is generally inadvisable to travel with a fine watch or other valuables to countries or regions with a high security risk. Here are a few reasons why this may not be a good idea :
- Risk of theft : In areas of conflict or high crime, the risk of theft is higher. Luxury watches often attract attention and can be targeted by thieves.
- Personal safety : Travelling with valuables can attract the attention not only of thieves, but also of other unscrupulous individuals. This can put your personal safety at risk.
- Risk of confiscation : In some countries at war or in conflict, the authorities can be very strict about importing luxury items. Your watch could be confiscated or you could be subject to in-depth security investigations.
- Difficulty in obtaining help : In the event of a problem, such as the theft of your watch, it can be difficult to obtain help from local authorities or embassies, particularly in conflict zones where resources and stability are limited.
It is advisable to leave your valuables in a safe place at home or in a secure safe when you travel. If you absolutely must wear a watch, consider using a less expensive, discreet watch to avoid attracting attention. At the end of the day, your personal safety should always be your top priority when travelling.
You will be compensated for the purchase value.
A number of conditions must be met, as set out in the general terms and conditions of your policy :
- Watch model identified and registered in your WFL collection (product photo, serial number).
- File a complaint with the appropriate authorities.
- Report the loss to WFL within 48 hours of the theft (sinistre@watchforlife.ch).
- Presentation of the original purchase invoice.
Reimbursement will be made to your personal bank account within 30 days of the insurers’ decision.
